Arab and British in equal measure, Samar Maakaroun is a designer and creative director renowned for her creatively multilingual approach to design. Her work embraces nuance, complexity, interaction and play, seeing multiplicity as a source of continuous opportunity for insight and discovery. In both theory and practice, her design work explores the places of intersection, integration, alignment or divergence – in language, culture, typography and brand. Thinking and co-creating in different scripts and contexts, Maakaroun looks for inspiration in diverse linguistic and scriptural fields, designing brands with aesthetic parity regardless of language.
In 2021, Maakaroun brought her ethos and methods to a team of four designers, spanning three generations and speaking seven languages between them, to form Right to Left. Since 2023, she has also become a partner at the multi-disciplinary design studio Pentagram. Built on the conviction that great design cannot happen without passion, intelligence and personal commitment, Pentagram’s portfolio spans more than five decades, many industries, and clients of every size.
