Creatives, grab your forks: the first ever global award celebrating the future of food is now open for submissions. The newly-launched Future Food Design Awards is the foremost international prize intended to encourage and highlight innovative designs for sustainable future food.

Redesigning the way we eat

The competition was launched earlier this month by the Dutch Institute of Food & Design and Agri Meets Design. It is open to designers, artists and food enthusiasts from all over the world who are exploring and challenging the current food system, “from scenes at the table to food chains.” Projects like Next Nature Network’s Bistro In Vitro come to mind as an example of a future food vision that manages to both disrupt and dissect our eating culture. Themes could also include land and water management, food security, factory farming, migration and technology.

The deadline for entering projects and designs is 30 July 2017. The winner will receive a cash prize of €5,000, to be presented at an awards ceremony during the 2017 Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. The internationally renowned jury includes eating designer Marije Vogelzang (NL), and artist and philosopher Koert van Mensvoort (NL) – both of whom are alumni of the What Design Can Do stage.

Food and climate change

Indeed, the conversation around food, society and design has always been a point of interest at each of our events. This year especially so, as we kick-off of our own global design competition – the WDCD Climate Action Challenge – in which food is one of the 5 main topics in the briefing.
