Reclaim the Algorithm
Friday 6 June | 14:30 – 16:45 | Pakhuis de Zwijger
What if we designed AI not just to be efficient, but to be caring, fair, and deeply connected to communities?
In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn to imagine and prototype AI systems that are rooted in care, resistance, and collective repair.
Led by Abdelrahman Hassan – a creative technologist, AI strategist, digital anthropologist, and poet – the session invites you into his practice of Everyday Data (H)activism: using data in creative ways to challenge inequality and reclaim the power of technology for the people.
Together, we’ll explore how today’s AI systems are shaped by histories of inequality and extractive data practices — and how we can do things differently. Using accessible tools and methods, you’ll begin to design AI concepts that are not only technically possible, but also joyful, disruptive, and socially grounded.
What will you take away?
By the end of the session, you will:
- Understand how data and AI systems reflect power dynamics — and how to challenge them.
- Learn how to approach technology from a place of creativity, care, and community.
- Develop an initial idea or prototype for an AI tool or concept rooted in justice and imagination.
- Feel inspired to use data and design as tools for joyful resistance and meaningful change.
