Circular Futures 1 Hour With… Thomas Rau
Friday 6 June | 17:00-18:00| GROTE ZAAL | Pakhuis de Zwijger
Architecture as a Material Revolution
How do we design a future that doesn’t just respond to the climate crisis—but rethinks our entire relationship with time, resources, and responsibility?
In this dynamic and conversational session, architect and thought leader Thomas Rau shares his radical approach to architecture, materials, and climate responsibility. Known for pioneering fully circular, energy-positive buildings, Rau challenges us to rethink our systems—from how we construct and deconstruct, to how we value materials not as waste, but as carriers of potential.
Drawing from decades of groundbreaking work and a deep commitment to the circular economy, Rau will explore how architecture can shape not just sustainable buildings, but sustainable futures. One of his most recent projects—the circular pavilion for Expo 2025 in Osaka—puts these ideas into practice. Designed to be fully dismantled and reused after the Expo, the building exemplifies circular design and material stewardship on an international scale.
The session invites open exchange and audience participation—come with your questions, thoughts and provocations. Let’s reimagine what’s possible, together.
