Parking signs in the US are virtually incomprehensible. But what is even more incomprehensible is that it took till now before a designer decided to do something about it. Nikki Sylianteng, a designer living in New York who recently graduated from the School of Visual Arts, took up the challenge. ‘I’ve gotten one-too-many $95 tickets because I thought I read the sign right but apparently didn’t’, she writes on her website.

Sylianteng figured a driver who wants to park his car has only two questions: ‘Can I park here now?’ and ‘For how long?’. She started out by testing her redesign on the street, adding a space for reactions. The project ‘To park or not to park’ got lots of press coverage and currently the city of Los Angeles is considering introducing the design. We hardly can think of a better way to show what design can do.
