‘Witch Doctor is a cynical view on alternative medicine,’ Torre Florim told newspaper De Volkskrant referring to the video clip that brought his band DE STAAT world fame. ‘Some time ago there was a doctor who invented a medicine against aids that has been used for years in Africa. Now research has shown that it had no effect whatsoever. The video clip is a kind of extreme enlargement of this kind of cases. Essentially it is about people who out of gut feeling are carried away by the masses, without any scientific support.’
Dutch rock band DE STAAT was formed in 2007 in Nijmegen around singer, songwriter and guitar player Torre Florim. Their debut album ‘Wait for Evolution’ was released in 2009 and in no time they played festivals such as Glastonbury, City to City, The Great Escape, SXSW, CMJ, Iceland Airwaves, Sziget and Lowlands.
A second album, ‘Machinery’, followed in 2011 and the third, ‘I-CON’, in 2013. Just before the release of the fourth album, ‘O’, early in 2016, the video clip to the song ‘Witch Doctor’ from the I-CON album was launched. It was an instant success on social media, with until now more than 40 million views worldwide.
