Currently to be seen in London: Fridges Fight Back: a Chilling Exhibition curated by the British Museum of Food, which is an initiative of the culinary experience design duo Bompas & Parr. The exhibition, open until 26 November, and the accompanying booklet Fridges Fight Back: The White Goods are Restless, examine the darker side of food.
‘Fridges are perceived as some kind of friendly electric device that will never betray us – we leave them switched on when we go on holiday even when we turn off the toaster at the wall,’ Harry Parr told FAD Magazine. ‘But the simple truth is that fridges can be dangerous too, and while they are a central part of our lives, and an embodiment of our economic sophistication, nutrition and health, it’s clear we should re-evaluate their role and be cognisant of the fact that they can fail and case damage and death.’
The exhibition in KK Outlet at 42 Hoxton Square brings together two speakers who will perform at WDCD Live São Paulo 2016 on 13 & 14 December, being Sam Bompas and Erik Kessels, as KK Outlet is actually KesselsKramer’s London office annex gallery. The two certainly find each other in their appreciation of the communicative value of the absurd.
The fridges exhibition draws attention to the fact that across Britain 855 fires were reported to have been started by fridge-freezers between 2011 and 2014, accounting for 7 per cent of fires caused by electrical products.
Artworks also include bacteria bred from the fridges of celebrities and filmed content depicting the technical evolution of fridges. The exhibition also features a community fridge, allowing locals to deposit food and drink that will be shared with local charities and food banks.
